FAQ: Will Private Insurance Companies Pay For Newborn Hearing Screening? Mother, Father & Infant
spacer
Last Modifed: 01/11/2023

A: Some states have legislatively mandated that all health insurers must pay for newborn hearing screening (e.g., Massachusetts, Rhode Island, West Virginia). In other states, however, it depends on the insurer, and most programs have been reasonably successful in getting health insurers to pay. In many cases, however, it hasn't been automatic, and someone has had to spend a significant amount of time educating insurance company staff about the rationale for and benefits associated with newborn hearing screening. Programs which have tracked reimbursements have found that by working with the various insurance companies, they are able to achieve very respectable reimbursement rates.
