Doris R. Lewis, PhD, Professor at Pontificia Universidade Catolica de São Paulo in Brazil. Graduated in Speech Pathology and Audiology and Doctors degree in Public Health. Actually is teaching in Master and Doctors program in Audiology at Pontificia Universidade Catolica de Sao Paulo, in subjects as hearing health care in children, electrophysiology and pediatric audiology, including newborn hearing screening and audiological evaluation of infants and small children.

Alison Hart, MPH, serves as a program coordinator for OZ Systems, a child-centric information management solution company. Her primary role is to provide coordination and ongoing support to Early Hearing Detection and Intervention programs in Brazil, South Africa, Maryland, and Tasmania and Queensland in Australia. She recently presented at the Conference - Opening Doors: A State of the Science Conference in Bethesda, Maryland.
Prior to joining OZ Systems, Alison completed her MPH in Maternal and Child Health at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine where she was a member of the Delta Omega Honorary Society and a Match scholar. She received her bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University.

Building Capacity of Improved Follow-up Processes in Sao Paulo Brazil |

Abstract: |
In April 2008 a pilot project in Sao Paulo Brazil initiated to build the capacity for follow up care in the detection of hearing loss in infants. The project included 3 hospitals in Sao Paulo as well as a University sponsored audiology and ENT clinic. Students working at both the hospitals and audiology clinic were involved in the screening and monitoring of follow up. Currently, Brazil does not have a UNHS program, but both State and City officials are investigating ways to improve newborn hearing outcomes.
Strengthening processes in tracking and monitoring screening and follow up care is an effective way to build the sustainability and capacity of a program to grow and adapt. The implementation of an information system can be used to monitor service quality and provide the quantitative data needed to inform program expansion and coverage. For this project, screening data from 2007 was compared with data entered during the pilot project to analyze the impact of tracking and monitoring on follow up care. As a part of the pilot project, screeners were taught new skills and empowered to manage and track patient results and information.
The introduction of process improvements including data management solutions and process improvements is a sustainable solution to build capacity for current and future endeavors to expand and enhance newborn hearing screening efforts in Brazil. |
