Name: Nicole Brown
Affiliation:
Nicole Brown MSN, PHN, CPNP is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner and is the EHDI Follow-up Coordinator for Minnesota, focusing on the development and coordination of systems to provide services and supports to children identified with hearing loss and their families. She is also the parent of two daughters who have a profound hearing loss and were identified through the newborn hearing screening program.

Name: Kirsten Coverstone
Affiliation:
Kirsten Coverstone M.A., CCC-A, FAA is one of Minnesota's EHDI Coordinators. She has a Masters degree in Audiology from the University of Northern Iowa. Kirsten has continued her education specifically in the area of infant hearing and has focused on advocating and educating professionals, parents and communities on newborn hearing screening.

Name: Yaoli Li
Affiliation:
Yaoli Li is one of Minnesota's EHDI Coordinators. She is an audiologist with 15 year experience in Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgeries. Her interest in newborn hearing screening dates back to 1985 when she was a WHO fellow, involved in research on newborn hearing screening with ABR at the Department of Otolaryngology, University of Toronto, Canada. She did research on 1140 deaf children in rural China in 1987. She worked as a Research Associate on Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emmissions (DPOAE) in the ENT Department, University of MN from 1992-95, then obtained her Master’s degree in Audiology at the U of M. She was a clinical audiologist at the U of M before she became the MN CDC EHDI grant coordinator in 2001.

Name: Candace Lindow-Davis
Affiliation:
Candace is the mother of a profoundly deaf son, and for the past 8 years, developed and coordinated services for the MN Hands & Voices at Lifetrack Resources in Minnesota. For 7 years, Candace has also served as a parent consultant for the MN Dept. of Health's Newborn Hearing Screening Program. She also serves on the MN Dept. of Health's Newborn Screening Advisory Committee, representing parents of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. She has also served as Co-Chair of the Center for Disease Control's Parent-to-Parent Committee, developing parent materials for national use. She has presented at national, state and local conferences. In 2002, Candace received "The Distinguished Service Award" from Minnesota Speech - Language - Hearing Association. In 2006, she received the Betty Hubbard Maternal and Child Health Leadership Award.

Abstract: |
Minnesota’s landmark EDHI legislation in the spring of 2007 propelled the State’s EHDI Program forward causing numerous and rapid program changes. While still not a leading state in program data, the Minnesota EHDI data is showing improvement, particularly in the areas of loss-to-follow-up and connection to Early Intervention, the Medial Home, and Parent-to-Parent support for children with hearing loss. Tools that have been developed, refined, and utilized to improve the process of short-term follow-up will be discussed. Strategies to provide supports, services and resources for families of children diagnosed with hearing loss will be shared. These strategies include using Hands & Voices parent guides as the initial point of contact for follow-up of children with hearing loss and enhanced connections to Early Intervention Family Service Coordinators to strengthen the relationship between early intervention and the EHDI Program. Minnesota’s “Just in Time” education to primary care providers has set the foundation for long-term follow-up activities for Minnesota’s EHDI System.
