Abstract:

The JCIH Year 2007 Position Statement calls for Early Intervention (EI) that is evidence-based, driven by realities obtained from research and documented practice outcomes that critically examine conventions that may no longer be relevant for 21st century infants with hearing loss. JCIH-2007 advocates EI that is neuro-developmentally appropriate, family-centered, culturally sensitive, collaborative across disciplines and within the community, and prepares children and families for transition to school participation. The Position Statement concludes by issuing a challenge to increase the number of highly qualified professionals re-tooled and prepared for today’s children. The Texas Christian University (TCU) Center for Listening and Spoken Language Summer Institute was established in response to JCIH-2007, developed collaboratively among a private and a public university, the Texas Education Agency (TEA), a children’s hospital, and 3 non-profit programs from 5 cities across Texas and Oklahoma. Audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and educators of the deaf and hard of hearing participate in week-long lecture and project-based learning at TCU and streamed to remote sites across Texas as well. Week 1 is followed by a week of practicum in facilitating listening and spoken language with children with hearing loss and their families. This presentation reviews the foundation evidence for the knowledge and skills targeted by the Summer Institute along with expected outcomes and strategies for program evaluation. Discussion will include strategies for supporting professional development in locations removed from conventional training venues.
