She worked as a clinical audiologist for 25 years prior to public health work. Vickie serves on the boards of the Marion Downs Hearing Center and Colorado Families for Hands and Voices.

The Colorado Experience with the NICHQ Collaborative |

Abstract: |
Colorado was one of five states to participate in the recent National Initiative for Child Health Quality (NICHQ) Medical Home Collaborative. The Collaborative required that each team consists of a parent, PCP, audiologist, early interventionist, the state EHDI coordinator, and Title V Director. Each state developed an aim statement and goals. The Colorado aim statement read: The ultimate goal of the Colorado EHDI program is for all infants to receive screening to ensure early identification and early intervention for the development of normal speech and language. This will be accomplished through a coordinated system of care between the medical home and the providers working with families. Our goals and activities were:
Increase the % of documented follow-up of failed screens from 80 to 90% by:
1. Identify the PCP prior to discharge.
2. Decrease the time for audiology evaluation to 2 months of age.
3. Develop a guideline recommending that families are referred to EI after the first audiological evaluation.
Through the use of Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA’S) tools we attempted to identify small tests of change that would help the system reach the goals. The NICHQ collaborative provided the opportunity to test and evaluate these incremental processes to improve the EHDI system for families and providers.
There were many lesson sand challenges learned at all levels of the system. Readers will gain insights into small changes that can impact the EHDI system statewide.
