Kathy has worked within the public school system for 30 years as an educator for young children with hearing loss, first in Iowa and for most of her career in the west suburban school districts of Minneapolis, MN. Her educational background includes a B.S. in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Iowa, M.Ed in Education for Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Speech Language Pathology and Audiology from Penn State University, teaching licensure in Parent/Family Education from the University of Minnesota and professional certification as an Auditory Verbal Therapist®. She currently serves as the Minnesota Department of Education EHDI Coordinator working to provide guidance, support and resources to professionals serving young children who have hearing loss and their families statewide.

Mary Cashman-Bakken works for the Minnesota Department of Education. She is the Deaf and Hard of Hearing State Specialist. She is the Director of the Minnesota Resource Center: Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Mary earned a BA from the College of St Benedict in St. Joseph, MN, an MA from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C and a JD from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. Mary is Deaf herself. She is married to Jon and they have two teenage daughters.

Abstract: |
Through statewide mandated early hearing detection, reporting, and intervention efforts, many more infants and toddlers with identified hearing loss and their families are now being referred to early intervention services provided by Minnesota public school districts and their community partners. For many families, this journey often begins with potentially overwhelming questions and feelings of “Now what do we do?” “We want to do the very best for our child, but what is that?' “Where do we even start?” “We don’t even know what questions to ask.” And--'Who are all these people now coming into our lives?”
Minnesota’s interagency early intervention services, called “Help Me Grow”, provide family-focused support to infants and toddlers and their families across the state. Early intervention service providers help the family plan for a good beginning that includes celebrating the strengths of the child and family, recognizing the supports that already exist within their family and community, and then providing support for identified needs.
In order to help families and service providers create that good beginning and systematically address the components of early intervention believed to be critical for positive outcomes for children with hearing loss and their families statewide, staff at the MN Dept of Education are piloting a pre-IFSP planning outline. This outline, in chart format, lists important considerations and service components for children with hearing loss and their families, helps families identify their strengths and needs, and helps families and IFSP teams ask and answer the question, “Who can help me with this?” Professionals are also finding this outline useful as a planning tool as they develop quality individualized early intervention services. We are pleased to share this draft pre-IFSP planning tool with other EHDI service providers and welcome your feedback. |
