Karen Anderson PhD works at the Florida Department of Health, Children’s Medical Services Bureau of Early Steps. She is the Audiology Consultant for Early Hearing Loss Detection and Intervention and the Early Steps Coordinator of Hearing and Vision Services since 2000. Karen was instrumental in developing the Serving Hearing Impaired Newborns Effectively, or SHINE, component of Early Steps. Karen is a past president of the Educational Audiology Association and the Washington Speech and Hearing Association. She has been awarded the 2003 Fred Berg Award in Educational Audiology, the 2007 Phonak award for best practices in educational audiology and the 2007 FLASHA Outstanding Service Award. Karen is the author or co-author of several test instruments such as Early Listening Function (ELF) and Children’s Home Inventory of Listening Difficulties (CHILD) and the guidance document Relationship of Hearing Loss to Listening and Learning Needs.

Abstract: |
The reimbursement rate for pediatric audiology services in Florida is very low. Yet timely, quality, and comprehensive audiology services are necessary to achieve EHDI goals. This presentation contains information about (1)how reimbursement through Part C for ongoing management was set up to motivate pediatric audiologists to work with Part C to serve infants with hearing loss (2) how a EHDI collaborated with Sertoma to achieve a state hearing aid loan bank and fail-safe funding for no-pay infants to achieve diagnostics, and (3)protocol and reporting requirements for pediatric audiologists to become enrolled as Children's Medical Services Approved Pediatric Audiogists. Through this carrot and stick approach Florida's cooperation with pediatric audiologists for quality, timely services is increasing. |
