Case Studies of Deaf Children with Language Deficits
Language acquisition is often taken for granted by the society at large because human beings do not remember when they acquired their language. However, lack of access to language acquisition opportunities has serious ramifications for Deaf babies and young children. Dr. Natasha Kordus, a psychologist who worked with Deaf children for over 25 years, and Julie Rems-Smario, Education Programs Consultant working with Deaf children at the California Department of Education, collected SB 210 data of Deaf children's language development (ages 0-5). Kordus and Rems-Smario have the bird's eye view of how language deprivation has a lifetime impact on Deaf children and will discuss three cases of Deaf children experiencing language deprivation. This discussion is imperative to close the gaps in services transitioning from early intervention to K-12 education.

- The participants will discuss about three different cases of Deaf children who struggled with language acquisition and development.
- The participants will have the opportunity to explore different ways to foster healthy language acquisition opportunities during the critical period from birth to the age of five.

Presenter: Natasha Kordus
Dr. Kordus graduated with her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Gallaudet University, She's worked in Deaf Education for 25 years and specializes in the assessment of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, ages 0 to 22. She supervises two departments at the California School for the Deaf in Riverside: Assessment Services and the California Deaf Education Resource Center. Dr. Kordus feels fortunate to work with an awesome team that provides services to CSDR as well as districts all of Southern California. Dr. Kordus is also an adjunct professor for the Rochester Institute of Technology and provides training to mainstream programs on how to provide the most accessible environment for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and adolescents.

Julie Rems-Smario works at California Department of Education Deaf & Hard of Hearing Unit as the Education Program Consultant. She is committed as early intervention advocate. She is also one of the co-founders of Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids (LEAD-K). As past President of the California Association of the Deaf (CAD), she was part of the legislative team which helped to pass SB210. Her work was honored by DeafLife as the Deaf Person of the Year in 2015. During her tenure as the founding executive director of DeafHope, she was recognized with several awards, CNN Heroes, Pearls Award, and E-Women Network International Humanitarian Award.
