A Seat at the Table: Diverse Perspectives on Parent-School-Professional Cooperation
This workshop will be conducted by professionals representing the three perspectives parent, school and outside professional. Open to all EHDI attendees, this presentation will highlight the importance of cooperation and advocacy on behalf of the child by every one of the adults "at the table." The instructional session will include four parts: 1. An introduction to parent-school-professional cooperation and why it matters; 2. A panel discussion on 'having a seat at the table'; 3. A role play of a planning meeting, modeling the implementation of parent-school-professional cooperation; and 4. A presentation on practical strategies for ensuring that diverse perspectives are included in establishing goals and determining programming for young deaf and hard of hearing children.
- Partipants will be able to describe a minimum of two benefits to ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented "at the table."
- Participants will be able to list a minimum of three strategies to ensure that the perspectives of each person "at the table" is acknolwedged and recognized.
- Participants will be able to write a minimum of two "take home strategies" that can be employed in future planning meanings, regardless of whether the participant is a parent, a school representative or an outside professional.

Amy Szarkowski, PhD, is a psychologist who specializes in working with children with reduced hearing and their families. Dr. Szarkowski is on the Core Faculty for LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities), at Boston Children's Hospital. Through LEND, she teaches and advises future leaders in health care about the needs of children with reduced hearing and children with disabilities. Dr. Szarkowski holds an academic appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She serves as the Clinical Director for the Children's Center for Communication/Beverly School for the Deaf. Dr. Szarkowski is also an adjunct instructor for the Infants, Toddlers and Families (ITF) Interdisciplinary program at Gallaudet University.

Karen Hopkins is the Director of Statewide Education and Family Services at The Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Karen coordinates early intervention and early childhood education services for children birth through age 21 throughout the state of Maine, which includes The Parent Infant Toddler Program. outreach services statewide, and the Bilingual Bimodal Preschool Program at MECDHH. She serves on the Hands & Voices HQ Board, Maine Hands & Voices Board, the Maine Newborn Hearing Screening Advisory Board, The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Involvement Learning Community with NCHAM and has served on the National EHDI meeting planning committee.

Djenne-amal N. Morris brings passion, humor and real-life experience to her role as national parent/professional trainer, facilitator and motivational speaker whose view of the world not as it is, but as it could be. As a mother of an amazing son with CHARGE Syndrome, she strives to build an atmosphere of support and empowerment for families of children with special needs and the professionals who serve them. This has led to her career working with families of with children with special needs, currently at BEGINNINGS for Parents of Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and current President of the Board of Directors for Hands & Voices HQ. Djenne and her husband provide consulting, workshops and coaching to families and professionals in the areas of family dynamics and special needs. She and her husband, Michael and have three children; Imani Sojourner, 23, Malik-Asante, 22 and Zakiya-mali, 17.
