Development of a dual fiber based fluorescence system for thermal property measurements

A fiber-based fluorescence system for thermal property measurements is developed in this work. The technique uses a dual-fiber configuration, one fiber directing the heating laser (pump) and the other directing the detection laser (probe). The two fibers are held in close proximity at a fixed separation distance. The pump laser periodically heats the sample, inducing thermal waves in the material. The surface of the sample is coated with Lumidot CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles that fluoresce when excited. The fluorescent response to the periodic heating is detected through the probe fiber using a spectrometer. This allows for measurements of the phase of the temperature at a known distance from the pump beam for various modulation frequencies. From this measurement the thermal diffusivity of the material is determined. This work discusses the development of the system as well as the theory behind the design. The thermal diffusivity of samples of Ge, SiC, and SiO2 are measured in order to compare results of the measurement system against literature values.
