Working with victims of DV and other crimes: the experience of collaboration when helping the Latino community
This is a team workshop comprised of a mental health clinician, and two victim advocates (West Valley PD and Utah Office of Victims of Crime). All three presenters have experience working in a DV shelter and have used their experiences to continue and strengthen collaboration practices when working with victims of crime. This workshop aims to increase awareness of the importance of screening, referral and inter-agency collaborations when working with DV and victims of crime. Further, this workshop will allow participants to draw from "on the ground" learning experiences of three Latina victim advocates working with Latin@ communities in three different agency settings and the common barriers and strengths that are encountered in the process.
- Increase awareness of the inter-relation of agencies across services when working with victims of crime
- Provide tangible examples of how governmental and private agencies can collaborate
- Share how best practices can be develop from the experiences learned when working with the Latin@ community

Karla Arroyo is the Director at Multicultural Counseling Center, Merari Lopez is a Victim Advocate for the West Valley Police Department and Valeria Torres is a Crime Reparations Officer at the Utah Office of Victims of Crime. Their shared professional experience brings over 30 years of providing direct services and their own reflexivity as Latina immigrants.

Jeannete is a long term community volunteer. She started her volunteer efforts when Comunidades Unidas was first established in 1997. Jeanette has been involved in multiple projects educating and empowering the Latino community. Most recently Jeannette was a key participant in the development, implementation and certification of the Community Health Worker program (CHW).
