Leveraging Hattie's “Big Hitter” Literacy Instructional Practices to Improve Student Outcomes!
Hattie reports, “In the field of education, one of the most enduring messages is that everything seems to work…that there are so many solutions…and most have evidence supporting their use…though, the leveraging power in terms of student learning varies greatly” (Hattie, 2010). Participants in this session will learn about Hattie's "big hitter" teacher literacy actions, which leverage student learning across all tiers of intervention. Participants will have an opportunity to practice these techniques. Teachers’ use of effective practices, and evaluation of those practices based on student achievement, is vital to all students across all tiers (Hattie, 2012). Participants will learn to use these teacher practices effectively in school settings.
- By end of session, participants will demonstrate conceptual knowledge of several of Hattie’s big hitter practices for literacy instruction.
- By end of session, participants will describe the relationship between data collection and instructional decisions, in refinement of implementation of Hattie’s big hitters in their setting.
- By end of session, participants will demonstrate skill in enacting several of Hattie’s big hitter practices for literacy instruction, in role-play situations, and demonstrate appropriate levels of competency as per peer observation checklists.

Dr. Forbush has provided 25 years of service in a variety of educational settings. Presently, he is director of the Utah Professional Development Network at Utah State University. Dr. Forbush served as a special education LEA in Idaho and Utah. He was recognized in 2013 as Special Education Director of the Year by the Utah chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children. He has prepared undergraduate teachers, and graduate researchers at Utah State University. He regards himself as an “outcomes junkie,” and “education performance engineer,” and a

Rebecca Peterson

Rebecca Peterson, M. Ed., is an education specialist and project coordinator with the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). She is a coach for LEAs who are implementing a mult-tiered system of supports and is a specialist within the Special Education Section. Rebecca's prior experience includes working as a special educator, high school AP and IB biology teacher, science department chair, teacher mentor, MTSS coordinator, PLC director, and school principal. Rebecca's research interests include effective organizations, effective instruction, supporting students with disabilities in advanced classes, effective collaboration and teacher efficacy.
