Attachment and Trauma in DHH Adopted Children

As both parents and professionals of 2 Deaf adopted sons, presenters will offer a unique perspective to professionals and parents. Presentation will include information on trauma and how it affects brain development including language, learning and behavior. They will also discuss how to identify and work with the unique challenges that adoptive families face that result from attachment issues and trauma typically associated with adoption. Providers will learn how to develop an effective partnership with families who have adopted deaf children, as well as how to utilize parent to parent support in reaching their goals with the families.

  • Participants will learn how trauma affects language, learning and family dynamics
  • Participants will learn how attachment and trauma can cause adopted/foster children to develop differently than biological children
  • Participants will be able to identify unique characteristics to working with families who have adopted children who are DHH

Jon Bergeron, PhD is a clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience. He specializes in working with foster and adoptive families struggling with attachment and trauma related difficulties. Jon and his wife Shelly live in Austin, TX with their 2 Deaf adopted sons. Jon and Shelly have been involved with parent support groups and working with families relating to both deafness and adoption for the past 12 years.

Shelly Bergeron (), Statewide Outreach Center at Texas School for the Deaf, shelly.bergeron@tsd.state.tx.us;
Shelly works as the Intervention Care Coordinator for the Statewide Outreach Center at Texas School for the Deaf. In this position she partners with TEHDI and other stakeholders to reach out to families with newly identified infants as well as analyze data to improve the Loss to Follow up and Loss to Documentation (LTF/LTD) in Texas. She and her husband Jon live in Austin, Texas and have two sons who are Deaf.
