George Washington: The Farmer
Participants will return to their classrooms with mountains of ideas from Mount Vernon showcasing Washington’s role in modern-day agricultural practices as a 17th century farmer and entrepreneur. North Dakota teachers, Cheryl Bombenger and Mary Kensok, will offer classroom-ready activities developed after participating in a week-long institute, George Washington: First in Business, in Alexandria, VA. This 60-minute session will be packed with technological and interactive experiences for 21st Century learners... Plickers, Flipgrid, Peardeck, Chatterpix, QR Codes, Quizlet, Padlet, and more. Bring an appetite for cherries and learning, but leave the hatchet at home!

Weaving agriculture into the classroom comes natural for North Dakota teacher, Mary Kensok. Kensok, a 32-year veteran, presently teaches 6th grade social studies in West Fargo, ND. Mary is a 2012 White-Reinhardt and a 2013 National Award for Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture recipient. Last summer, Mary was honored to participate in a George Washington: First in Business Institute. She has been active in North Dakota Food, Land and People workshops and institutes for the past 10 years. Her classroom is always buzzing with activity—growing gardens, hatching chickens, caring for class pets and growing vegetables using a tower garden system of hydroponics and aeroponics technologies. Travel has enabled Mary to experience farming techniques globally-- rice in Japan, potatoes in Germany, gardening in Russia, grapes in Italy and sheep and salmon in Iceland. Mary has a passion for lifelong learning and sharing knowledge with learners of all ages.

Cheryl Bombenger

Cheryl Bombenger is an educator and presenter who enjoys bringing excitement into the classroom through academic songs. Her program, TA-DA, Teaching Activities Done Aesthetically, uses music by incorporating academic songs to increase student engagement. In addition, these academic songs become the vehicle to improve learning, provide a movement break, as well as are a means to improve student reading and writing. Cheryl presents at state, national, and international conferences. Using academic songs allows her as an educator to blend the science, social studies, technology, engineering, ag, and SEL, and math with her enthusiasm for incorporating music! In addition, Cheryl’s passion for incorporating gardening, as well as all aspects of agriculture, is at the forefront of her lessons. Cheryl is a recipient of the national White-Reinhardt Teacher Scholarship award promoting agricultural literacy, as well as the Teacher In Excellence award in 2016.
