Keep Calm and Carry On! -Teaching Self Regulation Strategies
Rates of anxiety and depression are increasing even in early childhood and we know that anxiety, depression and aggression are the results of poor emotional regulation. We also know that preschoolers are just learning to identify their emotions and those around them as well as understand and follow established rules of behavior. This session will focus on creating a safe and healthy environment that addresses trauma-informed care as well as helping preschoolers learn to recognize, label, and express emotions appropriately through teaching self regulation strategies and setting up Cozy Corner/ Wellness Centers in each classroom with intentional materials that help students learn calming strategies.
- Demonstrating various self regulation strategies for preschool students- including Calming Corners/Wellness Centers and Sensory/Calm Down Kits.
- Discussing trauma informed classrooms and how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) impact the social and emotional wellness of preschool students and how to intervene and support.
- Discussion on how to create an environment that will give students a place to become calm and collected through activities and intentional materials to help them have a greater self awareness to identify and manage emotions and behaviors appropriately.

Lee Ann has a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education with a Special Education Endorsement as well as an English as a Second Language and Reading Endorsement. She is also trained in Reading Recovery and Peer Coaching. She has also earned a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Southern Utah University. She is a former preschool teacher and special education K-8 teacher. She worked for 12 years at the district level as a Special Education Coordinator mentoring teachers and providing consultation to administrators. She has worked the past three years as the Preschool Coordinator for Washington County School District Preschools
