INFLUENCE OF WATERSHED- AND REACH-SCALE VARIABLES ON ORGANIC MATTER PROCESSING IN AN URBAN WATERSHED (ATLANTA, GA)

The decomposition of organic matter (OM) is a fundamental component of biogeochemical cycling in stream ecosystems. In urbanizing landscapes, changing environmental conditions can influence OM processing, impacting the lability of OM in urban streams. Watershed scale variables, such as impervious surface cover, can obscure important local variables that may be more influential in explaining differing rates of OM decomposition in urban streams. As such, we remain limited in our mechanistic understanding of how certain biological drivers influence decomposition in urban watersheds. Our goal was to identify co-occurring and distinct abiotic and biotic drivers of decomposition across a gradient of urban land-use at different spatial scales. We expected decomposition in urban streams to be primarily driven by local variables. To test this, we deployed a standardized cotton-strip assay to compare the decomposition potential of 18 stream sites in the Atlanta metropolitan area. We quantified the contribution of breakdown mechanisms driven by fungal activity, water chemistry, and other reach scale parameters related to physical habitat and regional urban land cover. The results from this study will aid in elucidating spatially explicit, mechanistic drivers of OM decomposition.
