Modern State of Caucasian Black Grouse in Azerbaijan

Caucasian Black Grouse (Lyrurus mlokosievicszi Taczan., 1875) distribute in 6 countries of Caucasus region. 3-rd biggest population located in Azerbaijan (1500-2000 individuals, Patrikeev, 2004). CBG is distributed on elevation about 2000-2500 m on sub-alpine belt of Caucasus Mountains. Azerbaijan population of CBG on Greater Caucasus is investigated from 2002 up to our days (Sultanov et a., 2003 and latest researches). Population on Lesser Caucasus, including Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, was investigated by us in 2004-2005 (Sultanov, 2006). CBG included in IUCN Red List as Near Threatened species and in Red Data Book of Azerbaijan as II.4. (Threatened resident species, subjected to sharp fluctuations; Musayev, Karimov, Sultanov, 2013). Common lek has 7-11 males. Results shows that average density of birds on Lesser Caucasus was 3-4 times lesser than in Greater Caucasus throughout occurring of flatter slops and as a result – more intensive grazing. We estimate general number of CBG in Azerbaijan part of Greater Caucasus in 1500-3000 individuals (9 districts) and 1000-1500 on Lesser Caucasus (6 districts). So total Azerbaijan population can be estimated in 2500-4500 individuals. Main threats for CBG in conditions of Azerbaijan is grazing and illegal hunting. Us researches shows that CBG regularly encounter on all appropriate habitats of Greater Caucasus. In conditions of Azerbaijan CBG strongly connected with birch tree. Grazing pressure is traditionally high but birds adapted to it and finish breeding and lekking activity to the moment of arriving of animals to alpine meadows?. Pressure of illegal hunting is increasing during last years
