Mensuration: Key to Corralling EHDI Data
Public health programs need accurate tracking and reporting tools to manage their programs but also to respond to requests from local, state and federal entities about program performance.
The Texas Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (TEHDI) Program and its partner, OZ Systems, have spent the last few years enhancing their reporting tools in order to better respond to requests from the local stakeholders, the state legislature and to the Centers for Disease Control.
Questions such as how many babies have been diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing, what parts of the state have the highest loss to follow-up rate, how is my hospital performing compared to the rest of the state, how many of our children return for a screen after being discharged from the hospital and what’s our loss to follow-up rate, who is reporting diagnostic care, are just a few of the questions that are posed to the TEHDI Program.
The birth cohort in Texas is over 390,000 annually. Responding to these requests when coupled with the more than 500 providers in the state makes the task of reporting challenging and complicated at times. To arm the TEHDI team for such requests, a report is created quarterly in order to provide baseline information about many of these questions. It provides an easy to reach resource about the items mentioned above along with many others.
In this session, the TEHDI Program will review the various tables and charts provided in the quarterly report. It will include details about the data elements needed to assess these metrics and the tools in Excel used to expedite the analysis.

Mary Catherine Hess

Mary Catherine Hess has worked with EHDI programs since 2002. Most recently she worked for OZ Systems as an Account Manager for the Texas EHDI Program and the USVI EHDI Program. Prior to that, she was the Program Administrator for Rhode Island’s EHDI Program from 2001-2008 and co-chair of the CDC EHDI Data Committee from 2007-2008. She has presented at local, regional and national EHDI events on topics related to newborn hearing screening, data management and data reporting, and most recently standards-based messaging for EHDI programs.
She achieved her MA in Linguistics from Gallaudet University and holds a BS in Communication Disorders. She is a certified ASL/English interpreter. Her interests include communication access issues in health care settings, assistive technology and long-term outcomes for deaf and hard of hearing children identified through the EHDI process. She is a yogi, pug lover and fan of NPR and folk music.
