Applying Evidence-Based Improvement Strategies Workshop (Part 2)
Through a mix of presentation, the use of new tools and guides, and facilitated discussion, the Utah LEA and school leaders attending this interactive workshop from the Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West) at WestEd will gain deeper knowledge of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) evidence requirements and develop capacity to examine the evidence base for interventions to address their identified needs.

John Rice is the Director of the Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West) at WestEd.
REL West supports educators in California, Nevada, and Utah to increase their use of data and evidence in decision making. Funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) at the U.S. Department of Education, REL West works with partners — including state departments of education, districts, and schools — with research and analytic assistance as they select or design new programs, strategies, or policies, and implement and evaluate them.
Rice previously worked with WestEd’s Health & Justice Program, where he developed and directed evaluations for local, statewide, and national agencies, as well as for institutions of higher education; monitors project activities and budgets; and provided information on program improvement to school and district leaders, and other stakeholders.
Rice also worked with WestEd’s Institutional Development team, reviewing and providing feedback on grant and contract proposals from across the organization, including those submitted to the National Science Foundation and IES.
Prior to joining WestEd, Rice managed evaluations of federal programs at IES. These evaluations included randomized controlled trials of school-based mentoring and violence prevention.
Rice received a PhD in human development (developmental psychology) from the University of California, Irvine.
