Screening up to three years of age for late onset hearing loss (LOHL): considerations for early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) programs and two models of implementation.

This presentation will explore the roles that EHDI programs could play in screening children up to three years of age for hearing loss. It is intended to give HRSA/MCHB grantees ideas on ways they could meet the requirement of developing a plan for implementing LOHL screening in their state/terriotry. Between birth and the time that children reach school age, the incidence of sensorineural hearing loss increases from ~2-3/1000 to ~6-9/1000. Early identification of non-congenital hearing loss and referral to early intervention positively affects both the developmental and educational outcomes for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in the same way that it does for newborns. In addition to addressing questions regarding an EHDI program’s role (lead versus supporting) in LOHL screening, topics discussed will include procurement and maintenance of screening equipment, training of screening personnel, appropriate referrals and recommendations, reporting and follow-up expectations as well as program sustainability. Both Vermont and Wyoming have LOHL hearing screening systems in place. This presentation will highlight some of their experiences related to implementing and maintaining these screening programs. The information sharing component of this session will be approximately 30 minutes; the remainder of time will be reserved for a discussion among attendees moderated by the presenters. Attendees will be provided with resources and training materials that they are free to adapt and utilize in their home jurisdictions.
