A Dynamic Model of Urban Ag Education in the Classroom Utilizing Hydroponics Education

This innovative presentation will provide participants information on how to develop a unique community/school-based model entitled “Urban Ag Education: Utilizing Hydroponics Education.” The integrated project model provides participants with a model to promote and serves the local communities/schools, and address global trends Urban Ag Education. This presentation can be replicated throughout urban and rural schools. It will also provide information to help raise agriculture education awareness among diverse learners in schools and emphasize how hydroponics education production systems would contribute to enrich the nutritional offerings, enhance food security, and expand outreach to many youth and the community at large.

Presenters/Authors

Orlenthea McGowan (), Langston University-Tulsa Campus, osmcgowan@langston.edu;
Dr. Orlenthea McGowan is a full Professor and Project Director in the School of Education & Behavioral Sciences at Langston University- Tulsa Campus. She has experience in directing a nationally recognized PT3 Program, Ag Education School-Based Projects, Service Learning Projects, and establishing learner-centered teaching modules involving elementary and secondary pre-service and in-service teachers, administrators, and university faculty, and designing digital resource materials for faculty. In this project, she is the Director for intra-school collaborations, and is also responsible for directing and managing all project activities and functions. She is a proven leader in the field of Learned-Centered Teaching and School/Community-Based Programming. Dr. McGowan also serves as a Commissioner on the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women (Education/Health Sub-Committee).
