Without Coaching, You’re Just Hoping it Happens: Effective Systems Coaching for Sustained MTSS Implementation

In the effort to improve student outcomes, school systems are frequently introducing new practices and innovations. A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model is a framework that allows school systems to implement effective instructional and intervention practices to meet the needs of all students. Many resources including time, personnel, and money are allocated to implementation of MTSS. However, without effective systems coaching, much of those resources are wasted. Coaching has been demonstrated in research to increase implementation from 5% to 95% (Joyce & Showers, 2002). Coaching has also been shown to have a significant impact on whether practices are sustained over time (McIntosh, et al., 2013). Davis School District has been engaged in implementing positive behavior supports (a behavioral application of MTSS) in several elementary and secondary schools. Participants will learn about Davis’ model for systems coaching including the selection, training, and evaluation of coaches. Participants engage in whole-group discussion, small-group discussion, and personal reflection to identify barriers and facilitators to implementation of a systems coaching model in their setting.

  • Participants will have an understanding of the importance of coaching as a key driver in systems change implementation.
  • Participants will learn about one district’s model for coaching including selection of coaches, allocation of time, training of coaches/capacity building, and evaluation of coaching.
  • Participants will be able to identify potential barriers and facilitators to coaching to identify ways to implement a coaching model in their setting.
