Evaluating the Effectiveness of Skin Preparation Agents for Auditory Brainstem Response

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) has been used routinely to screen infant hearing status since the early 2000s. Nu-Prep is commonly used as a preparation agent to clean the skin prior to electrode placement, however, in recent manufacturer ABR training sessions, the recommendation for cleaning with baby soap as a preparation agent was advised as a standard procedure. A literature search revealed that evidence in support of this recommendation is tenuous at best. Although improvements in electrode technology and in equipment algorithms have led to enhanced recordings, the need for less aggressive skin preparation approaches prior to electrode placement has not been systematically investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of no prep, baby soap, and NuPrep as skin cleaning protocols for electrode attachment prior to ABR hearing screening and diagnostic procedures in adult participants.

  • Describe the practical differences between infant skin preparation agents and patient/parent preference
  • Explain the risk of using abrasive skin preparation agents for infant ABR hearing screening and diagnostic evaluation
  • Determine the best skin preparation agent for newborn hearing screening and/or diagnostic evaluation based on evidence
