The Michigan CMV Project: Increasing Awareness of Congenital Cytomegalovirus through Education and Screening in Pediatric Audiology Clinics
Background. Despite the potentially serious effects on a developing infant, awareness of congenital CMV (cCMV) and prevention strategies are low among the general population but also among those who care for pregnant women.
Objectives. To increase the awareness and diagnosis of cCMV through targeted educational and screening efforts in Washtenaw County Michigan.
Methods. The Michigan CMV Project brings together healthcare professionals and community stakeholders across institutions to increase awareness, diagnosis and treatment of cCMV. Educational interventions were provided to healthcare providers who care for women and young children, childcare workers, as well as pregnant women in the community. A hearing target neonatal cCMV screening program was instituted at our academic hospital through the Pediatric Audiology Clinics. Number of pregnant women receiving educational materials were analyzed, along with infants screened for and diagnosed with cCMV.
Results. Data collection is on-going and preliminary data is presented here. Over the course of the academic year approximately 10,000 educational flyers were distributed. Lectures targeting healthcare audiences reached approximately 200 providers. All infants with diagnosed hearing loss were offered cCMV testing, with one positive test to date.
Conclusions. Preliminary daya suggests that educational efforts around cCMV can increase community awareness. Future cost effectiveness and sustainability analyses are needed.

Dr. Pesch is a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrician and a mother of a young daughter with hearing loss. She has a particular interest in increasing awareness about congenital CMV and understanding the developmental profiles of children with hearing loss.

Katie Kuboushek is a board certified Audiologist with specialization in Pediatric Audiology. She is an advocate for congenital cytomegalovirus screening in infants with hearing loss and co-founded the Michigan CMV Project.
