 CHARGE: Where to begin

According to Smith, Centre, Smith & Blake (2010) CHARGE syndrome is a multiple anomaly developmental syndrome that is usually accompanied by some degree of hearing and visual impairment that is estimated to affect 1 in 15-20,000 babies born. The complex diagnosis has varied features which include: colomba of the eye, heart defects, choanal atresia, stunted growth, genital hypoplasia and ear abnormalities. Only through intentional inter professional practice with learners with CHARGE and their families achieve optimal outcomes. By first identifying learner’s preferred communication modality, professionals can then utilize a range of strategies to promote functional communication. Resources to support learners with CHARGE will be provided.

  • Implement communication strategies to support the learners with CHARGE.
  • Utilize resources to foster a learner’s development.
  • Describe the importance of inter professional teams to best support learners with CHARGE and their families.
