Development, Implementation and Results of a Cytomegalovirus Public Awareness Campaign: Nevada’s Experience
Cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the United States. All pregnant women are at risk of becoming infected; however, less than 10% of women know about CMV. The presenter will share the processes Nevada Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) incorporated to develop a public awareness campaign targeting specific audiences to increase knowledge of CMV, its effects and prevention strategies using an outside vendor with expertise in website design, social media marketing, and public health and marketing analytics. This presentation will detail the steps in planning, implementation, analysis and future campaign efforts. In addition to the processes implemented with assistance from the vendor, Nevada EHDI and the EHDI Stakeholder Committee implemented adjunct CMV marketing methods as a follow-up to the social media strategies. Nevada EHDI’s endeavors and successes may be duplicated or enhanced in other jurisdictions to produce similar results.
- Participants will be able to begin the process to develop a website to function as a landing site for CMV awareness efforts.
- Participants will be able to develop a plan to improve CMV public awareness through a variety of marketing modalities.
- Participants will be able to evaluate the outcomes of a CMV public awareness campaign.

Perry Smith has over twenty years of experience managing health and medical related programs and services within hospital/medical centers and in public health. He has been accountable for the fiscal management, business direction, program implementation, and human resources for these services ensuring efficient and effective performance. He has directed the work of clinical, non-clinical and professional staff to providing high quality client centered services. He has public speaking experience, addressing groups from youth, students, and medical professionals. He taught graduate and undergraduate level courses at the University of Nevada-Reno as an adjunct faculty. Mr. Smith has served on a variety of committees and boards ranging from a medical center institutional review board (IRB) to a prevent child abuse non-profit. He is currently the program coordinator for the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program within the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health.
