Maine's Early Hearing Detection and Intervention App: A Novel Approach to Education and Dissemination of Information to Providers in the Medical Home

In general, providers in the medical home receive limited training in deafness in infants and young children. In Maine, this has continued to be a concern among parents and EHDI staff trying to encourage follow-up testing when a baby has referred on their newborn hearing screening. Physicians also lack the knowledge of resources for parents during this journey through diagnostic followup and when a baby is diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing. This App was the brainstorm of our Chapter Champion in collaboration with EHDI staff and the QI specialist for the HRSA grant. What if we could provide this much needed information to these providers even when they only have a 20-minute appointment with the family? Join us to learn about the process we used to develop this App and get a chance to experience it and discover how this might work for your state.

  • Participants will be able to describe the EHDI 1-3-6 guidelines.
  • Participants will have a better understanding of the risk factors for late-onset hearing loss, need for continued screening and followup
  • Participants will be able to list ideas of local resources for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
