Talking About Summer: A Summer Resource Notebook for Preschool Listening and Spoken Language Teachers to Share with Families
Young children who are Deaf or hard of hearing acquire listening and spoken language (LSL) skills through repetitive practice in multiple environments with a variety of communication partners. These skills should be embedded into natural language experiences that build on a child’s everyday routines and daily living activities, such as brushing teeth or going to the grocery store. Yet, there can be obstacles in the progression of language development. This project gives focus to the fact that children may regress during long periods away from school, and that parents may not be sure how to support their child’s language development during the summer. Likewise, for professionals who have been working with these students over the school year, the summer break presents a challenge because of the lack of in-person instruction and partnership with students and parents. This project provides a resource to increase the likelihood that children will maintain the level of growth that they made during the school year. It offers guidance, resources, and concrete examples to families to empower them to maximize their child’s language opportunities during the time the child is not at school. This project equips professionals with a tool that is ready to be used, along with a video explanation of how to introduce the notebook to parents. The summer resource notebook contains parent friendly information on LSL strategies and auditory, vocabulary, and academic skills; reproducible activity pages for parents and children to complete together; and examples of ways to embed these tools and strategies in their family’s daily routines and activities. The “Talking About Summer…” notebook is an effective tool with which professionals and parents can partner together to promote ongoing LSL development of preschool children with hearing loss during summer break.
- Participants will discuss ways professionals can partner with parents to maximize the oral language development of preschool children with hearing loss during summer break.
- Participants will examine a personalized summer notebook which includes parent friendly information on Listening and Spoken Language strategies and auditory, vocabulary, and academic skills; reproducible activity pages for parents and children to complete together; and examples of ways to embed these tools and strategies in their family’s daily routines and activities.
- Participants will discuss the utilization of an accompanying video that will describe how to use the notebook and the free printable pages to create a notebook that they can use with their families and students.
