Deaf Mentors: Perspectives From Hearing Families and Deaf Individuals
Deaf mentors are an important aspect of early intervention services, however they are often underutilized. These professionals form a bridge between hearing families and the Deaf world. Interdisciplinary teams providing early intervention services should strive to collaborate with Deaf mentors, as they are also working with families and promoting language development. A qualitative study of families of d/Deaf and hard of hearing children found that their confidence in promoting language and visualizing their child’s success increased significantly. d/Deaf individuals also credit Deaf mentors with decreased feelings of isolation and increased self-esteem. As shown by the study, Deaf mentors bring an important contribution to intervention services by providing educational and emotional support and encouragement.
- Participants will be able to explain the important role that Deaf mentors hold within the interdisciplinary team.
- Participants will be able to apply strategies to facilitate collaboration with Deaf mentors in order promote intervention success.
- Participants will be able to describe how Deaf mentors can impact the confidence of families and the self-esteem of d/Deaf individuals.
