From Ears to Brain: 5 Strategies for Communication Development

Listening and talking doesn’t just happen because of early identification/diagnosis, early access to sound with proper amplification or accessibility to trained professionals. In order for children who are deaf and hard of hearing to get a kick start on their communication development, parents, caregivers, and providers can create enriched listening environments with the implementation of auditory verbal strategies. What exactly are these strategies? Which ones do we choose to use? Through my academic learning at Fontbonne University under the Interdisciplinary Preparation of Teachers of the Deaf and Speech-Language Pathologists to Provide Early Intervention Services to Young Children Who Are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and their Families paired with literature reviews, participating in observations of AVT sessions, and interviewing LSL professionals, I have accumulated these experiences into my top five recommendations to boost communication development for children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

  • Utilize these 5 strategies to foster communication in professional practice.
  • Recall the 5 strategies that are used in Auditory Verbal Therapy.
  • Will be able to share out these strategies with ease.
