School Wide Mental Health and PBIS: Critical Features
Research and our own personal experience with the systems shows that PBIS and MTSS can have wide positive impacts on students. While PBIS can lay the foundation in creating safe predictable environments for all children, educators also realize the need to more fully support our student’s mental health needs. School Wide Mental Health can provide mental health support in the tiered system that MTSS and PBIS rely upon, therefore creating appropriate levels of support for each student’s need. Working mental health into the tiered system allows for more consistent referral for necessary supports, and creates a clear range of interventions. This presentation will summarize the findings in the monograph Advancing Education Effectiveness: Interconnecting School Mental Health and School-Wide Positive Behavior Support, as well as draw on current research regarding mental health tiered supports and school wide mental health programs. Participants will learn the basics of integrating mental health into their own schools MTSS framework, and receive tools valuable to this process.
- 1. Participants will learn the critical features of School Wide Mental Health, and how this model aligns with MTSS/PBIS for best outcomes.
- 2. Participants will be able to identify key features needed to support a tiered mental health model working effectively in tangent with PBIS.
- 3. Participants will learn important models, considerations, tools, and steps school teams will need to enact in order to establish School Wide Mental Health, and be able to communicate this with their own school teams.
