Got Heifer? How You and Agriculture Can Change the World

Heifer International, a leader in sustainable agricultural development, wants to help you get your students excited about what agriculture can do to end hunger and poverty! With innovative and flexible educational resources for all grade levels, we offer both enrichment activities to use in the classroom and powerful experiential education based right here in Arkansas. This workshop will introduce you to a wide variety of free education and service-project resources that will have your kids enthusiastically learning about (and advocating for) what sustainable livestock-based agriculture can do to improve lives for farmer families all over the world!

Presenters/Authors

Cindy Sellers Roach (), Heifer International, cindy.sellersroach@heifer.org;
Cindy has been with Heifer since 1997, and her entire Heifer career has been in a range of educational capacities. She considers herself a native Arkansan, but as a former military brat she has also lived in Japan and Germany. She holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from Arkansas State University (ASU), where her primary areas of study were international relations and comparative politics. In addition to Heifer, her professional experience includes adjunct teaching for Arkansas State University, the University of Central Arkansas, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She resides in Vilonia, Arkansas near her family’s cattle farm, home to five generations (and counting). She has had the opportunity to see Heifer’s model at work improving lives of families in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Honduras, and is an enthusiastic advocate for engaging others in making the world a better place.

Liz Ellis (), Heifer International, liz.ellis@heifer.org;
In 2006 Liz was hired by Heifer International to run a farm to table kitchen at a Heifer facility, where visitors enjoyed the wonderful products grown there while learning about the relationships between hunger, agriculture and food systems. For four years, Liz also had the pleasure of serving on the board of Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom. While serving, she saw how many talented and creative teachers are deeply committed to fostering a deep appreciation for farming and to demonstrating the web of connections between food and society. Since 2014, Liz has been a Community Engagement Coordinator for Heifer International. In this capacity, Liz works directly with schools, faith communities and other groups who are passionate about ending hunger by supporting small farmers in need. Liz has been able to visit Heifer projects in Honduras and Guatemala, where she has seen for herself how transformative Heifer’s model truly is.
