EHDI-PALS: A Valuable Tool for Parents, Providers and EHDI Pro

The Early Hearing Detection & Intervention - Pediatric Audiology Links to Services (EHDI-PALS) is an online portal and web directory for parents and professionals in need of finding age appropriate, qualified pediatric audiologists in their communities. It is a comprehensive, user-friendly one stop shop containing comprehensive information and resources to help guide and educate parents searching for information on childhood hearing loss. Audiologists enroll by completing a detailed online facility survey developed by a committee of national experts. The survey, based on current best practice standards in diagnostics, amplification and cochlear implants employs a built-in algorithm which determines if standards are met and whether or not the facility is listed. An annual update and affirmation of information is required by the facility in order to show a status of current in the directory. In addition to the portal for parents and professionals, there is a framework of built-in tools designed to provide program data to assist the EHDI Coordinator with state improvement efforts. Since January of 2019 NCHAM has taken the lead on the EHDI-PALS program with the intention of enhancing and maximizing the existing platform to increase awareness, improve its integrity and increase utilization. Collaborating with EHDI Coordinators and providers we are revitalizing clinics with out-of-date information and increasing provider participation. Enhancements are also taking place such as the development and implementation of a Spanish version. This presentation will provide a review of the EHDI-PALS portal, EHDI program tools and resources, progress and outcomes of enhancement activities, data analysis that can benefit state program efforts and a discussion in which participants can share their experiences and provide feedback and suggestions.

Randi Winston-Gerson (), NCHAM, randiwinston@mac.com;
Randi consults on a variety of EHDI related projects with the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM). She maintains her role as program manager for NCHAM’s Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum (NHSTC), the EHDI-PALS Directory and the Newborn Hearing Screening Virtual Site Visit (VSV) Program. She has co-authored several research articles involving newborn and early childhood screening. From 1998– 2015 she maintained the role of consulting audiologist for The EAR Foundation of Arizona and Arizona's EHDI Program which included the implementation of newborn hearing and early childhood screening programs. The emphasis of her work included program quality, systems development, and best practices. During that time she served on NCHAM’s Technical Assistance Network, assisting states in Region X with their EHDI program development efforts. From 2015-2018 she served as Hearing Screening Program Manager at Audiology Systems. She continues to provide consultation to Arizona hospitals in need of technical support and program improvement. Randi holds doctorate of audiology, is state licensed in Arizona and a member of AAA and ASHA. She serves as co-director of the Arizona Special Olympics Healthy Hearing Program.

Dr. White is a Professor of Psychology, the Emma Eccles Jones Endowed Chair in Early Childhood Education, and the founding Director of the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. He has been the PI or Co-PI for over $50 million of competitively awarded research. His work has been recognized with awards from such diverse organizations as the Deafness Research Foundation, the American Association for Speech Language and Hearing, The Swedish Society of Medicine, and the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf. He has hundreds of publications and presentations at scholarly meetings, and has been an invited speaker to more than 35 countries. He also serves on many national and international advisory groups for organizations such as the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the World Health Organization, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
