Resources for Raising a Child with Hearing Loss
When parents learn that their child has a hearing loss it can be emotionally devastating. There are so many decisions to be made and so much conflicting advice. The situation is made even more stressful by the fact that so much learning occurs during each month of a child’s life.
The Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) is a free resource to help parents through this difficult time. DCMP is funded through the U.S. Department of Education so there is never a charge for any of our services. Parents can access an online video library of over 8,000 educational videos they can stream on demand.
In the privacy of their own home and at their leisure they can review various communication options for their child. They can learn about emotional and psychosocial effects of hearing loss on the individual and on the family. There are videos to teach American Sign Language and Cued Speech. There are videos on cochlear implants and lipreading. Parents can access a variety of perspectives and gain confidence that they are making informed decisions. They can learn about the unique educational needs of students who are deaf and hard of hearing then learn strategies to best work with their school system to meet these needs.
This presentation will introduce parents and educators to this valuable resource that can enhance the educational opportunities for their child.
