Real People: Relationship with Infants and Young Children
There has been an abundance of studies and articles on language acquisition and very limited discussion on infant mental health. The foremost skill a parent has is 'building a relationship' with the newborn, a real person. Healthy self concept and then arriving to self actualization (Maslow's: physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization) are a result of the right language acquisition/strategies, positive and authentic development and wholistic experiences. In addition, Galinsky's Mind in the Making reinforces the essential life skills (focus, self control, perspective taking, COMMUNICATING, CRITICAL THINKING, taking on challenges, self-directed engaged learning) that need to be instilled with infants and toddlers, especially when they are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, so that they can become life-long independent people. Again, these life skills depend on full language access, natural and enjoyable acquisition strategies, and positive experiences with the DHH children. This presentation will offer ideas as part of parent support and education with the parents in becoming attuned to their DHH infants and toddlers.
- Incorporate the Maslow Theory as essential foundation of infant mental health: well-being through parenting skills (bonding and acceptance).
- Infuse Galinsky's Mind in the Making as early part of infant/toddler mental health development.
- Discover that full language access, (free-flowing, natural, loving) do contribute to healthy infant-toddler mental health. development.

Jodee Crace graduated with a M.A. in School Counseling from Gallaudet University in 1988. Since then she has utilized her counseling degree and additional interdisciplinary studies in a variety of human development field as a developmental therapist with Indiana’s Part C agency, staff therapist at a Community Mental Health Center, as a school counselor and then as the Early Intervention Coordinator at the Indiana School for the Deaf. Currently, she provides consulting, coaching, and training services in Early Education and Family Support nationwide, including being a National Deaf Mentor Trainer and a state Parent Advisor Trainer, in which both utilize the SKI-HI Curriculums. Additionally, Jodee is an adjunct instructor with Gallaudet University’s certification program of D/HH Infants, Toddlers, and Families Collaboration and Leadership, along with leading Gallaudet's ASL Connect family resources. Finally, Jodee completed her service with the JCIH, representing Council on Education of Deaf.

Tony Ronco

Tony is married & the father of two young adults; one hearing and one deaf. His deaf daughter is now Junior at Gallaudet. He has been deeply involved in parent to parent support, and has served in numerous parent based organizations. Tony is trained & certified change agent, a professionally licensed engineer and a manager.
