LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency (TF)

LGBTQ+ cultural competency goes over basics of LGBTQ+ culture, terminology, and how our identities interact with multiple systems of oppression. We will talk about how the systems of oppression affect LGBTQ+ survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence, specifically: Heteronormativity, Homophobia, Cisnormativity, and Transphobia. These are barriers that affect access to services and support for survivors and perpetrators of domestic and intimate partner abuse. This workshop will cover the why and how to address those barriers.

Presenters/Authors

Andi Tremonte (), Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, atremonte@udvc.org;
Andi Tremonte has an educational background in Psychology and Women and Gender Studies. Andi has been a Trans support group facilitator and Safe Zone trainer for OUTreach, which is an LGBTQ+ youth resource center that serves rural Utah, and has done training throughout Utah for Starbucks Coffee Company, many local organizations, universities and community members. Furthermore, Andi is the LGBTQ+ cultural competency trainer for the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition. Andi supports rural domestic violence shelters in Utah, offering support services for underserved clients as well as trainings. Andi’s hobbies include creating terrain for Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, hanging out with their cats, Jorge and Toriko, and the outdoors. Except water, everything but water.
