Integrating Transportation Energy Demand in Net Zero and Autonomous Energy Districts
Urban developers, looking to highlight the value of intelligent and electrified mobility solutions and integrated vehicle charging strategies into net zero energy districts, have identified the need for analysis and optimized solutions. A discussion will include some of these net-zero energy district objectives that might enable high penetrations of PV, significant energy storage and intelligent transportation energy management scenarios. Discussion will include impacts of personal vehicles, transit, last mile solutions and electrified TNCs that could utilize multi-port, high power fast charging and high power, high capacity electrified roadways that are connected to an intelligent net zero energy district.

Kevin Walkowicz is the Manager of the Advanced Vehicles and Fueling Infrastructure Group within NREL’s Transportation and Hydrogen Systems Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory - which has a mission to research and develop solutions to reduce U.S. energy consumption and increase the use of domestic renewable resources. His group supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technology Office as well as other key industry partners and focuses on acquiring advanced technology vehicle and infrastructure data, developing analysis, simulation & visualization tools to assess impacts and opportunities for improved efficiency and conducting laboratory and in-use vehicle & infrastructure research including projects associated with connected and automated vehicle research. While at NREL, a primary focus has been on understanding light-duty and heavy-duty hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric drive systems and characterizing hybrid vehicle efficiency as it relates to duty cycle.
