An AuD Practicum Experience that Addresses EHDI Program Lost to Follow-Up Issues

State Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Programs continue to seek creative solutions to address newborn hearing lost to follow-up issues. In January 2014, Tennessee's EHDI Program partnered with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Audiology Program to implement an AuD practicum experience that has resulted in a win-win outcome for both programs. Select AuD students, with an expressed interest in pediatrics, work under the supervision of the EHDI Audiology Consultant to meet competencies by conducting follow-up on babies who have referred on their newborn hearing screen. Students gain meaningful experience as they: connect with and provide support to families; communicate with the medical home; and work collaboratively with EHDI Program partners to locate difficult-to-find families, manage an internal database, and report findings. The components of this unique experience will be discussed as well as evidence-based outcomes and perceived benefits from participants.

  • Describe the components of a new AuD practicum experience, which results from collaborative partnership between Tennessee's EHDI Program and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Audiology Program.
  • Explain how Tennessee's EHDI Program selected a target population to be included in the AuD practicum experience.
  • Identify the evidence-based outcomes and perceived benefits of the newborn hearing follow-up practicum experience.

Claudia Weber has worked for Tennessee's Part C Program, Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS) for many years. Most recently, she is the Newborn Hearing Follow-Up Coordinator. Claudia served as the Tennessee's early intervention core team member for the NICHQ Collaborative in 2012-2013.
