Detection and Quantification of a Variety of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in Domestic Reclaimed Wastewater Reuse Northern Utah
Reuse of treated wastewater for urban or agricultural irrigation has raised concerns of risks associated with exposure to compounds present in reclaimed water that can affect humans in various ways. According to previous research, small traces of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been detected in wastewater effluent. This USDA-NIFA funded study focused on the detection and quantification of 12 PPCPs in reclaimed wastewater in Northern Utah. Samples of wastewater influent; effluent; reclaimed water used for irrigation; and soil, plants, fruits and vegetables grown with reclaimed water, have been quantified. Twelve PPCP compounds considered in this study included: Acetaminophen, Caffeine, DEET, Sulfamethoxazole, B-Estradiol, Estrone, Progesterone, Gemfibrozil, Carbamazepine, Triclosan, Fluoxetine and Tris-(2-chloroethyl) Phosphate. The sampling was done in three municipalities in Northern Utah (Logan, Wellsville and Hyrum) that use different technologies to treat their municipal wastewater and use their reclaimed water for urban irrigation or for irrigation of forage during irrigation season. Solid phase extraction methods followed by Triple Quad LC/MS were used for analysis of water samples. The same method was used for analysis of plant, fruit and soil samples after samples were dried, lyophilized, and passed through an ASE (Accelerated Solvent Extraction) unit. The results from this study as well as potential reuse risks associated with these PPCPs are presented and discussed in this presentation.
