Pediatric Audiology: What You May Not Learn in School!
Pediatric audiology is both an art and a science. There are students who desire to become a pediatric audiologist based on experiences with children outside the field of audiology. Training programs provide education in the diagnostic and management aspects of pediatrics, but may not incorporate the "tricks" to working with children in a clinical setting. This panel presentation from skilled and seasoned pediatric audiologists will focus on ways to achieve successful test outcomes and habilitation goals with young children. We will discuss the day-to-day workings of a pediatric practice and the things you may not learn in school.
- Participants will be able to apply the strategies discussed in this session to their daily clinical practice.
- Participants will be able to identify unique strategies for evaluating and engaging young children in an audiology setting.
- Participants will be able to discuss ways they may implement modifications to test procedures when working with young children.

Shelley Moats

Dr. Moats is a pediatric audiologist with Norton Children's Medical Group in Louisville, KY. She has been practicing audiology since 1996. Dr. Moats specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood hearing loss, with special interests in early intervention, amplification and cochlear implants. Dr. Moats is active in state and national organizations, including KY-EHDI Advisory Board (co-chair) and various committees and boards for the American Academy of Audiology. Dr. Moats is the recipient of the 2022 Marion Downs Pediatric Audiology Award from the American Academy of Audiology. She is the first, and currently only, board certified pediatric audiologist in the state of Kentucky.

Charlotte Mullen

Charlotte Mullen, AuD, a Co-Presentor for this resource, is the primary pediatric audiologist for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program and Specialty Audiologist for Education and Training for the audiology service of Boston Children’s Hospital. She founded the Sound Outreach to Schools educational audiology program. Dr. Mullen has given numerous presentations to professional and parent groups. Her clinical work initially identified an increased incidence in hearing loss among children treated by extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Working closely with the Developmental Medicine Program, Dr. Mullen developed a clinical practice guideline for audiological monitoring which led to incorporation into the 2007 Joint Committee on Infant Hearing recommendations. Dr. Mullen is a founding member of the Audiology Clinical Education Network. She also coordinates the Virtual Pediatric Audiology meetings which provides a large forum for learning and discussing issues pertaining to pediatric practice.

Lauren Durinka

Lauren Durinka, AuD, is a pediatric audiologist at Nationwide Children's Hospital. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Hearing Science with a minor in Disability Studies from The Ohio State University. Dr. Durinka went on to complete her Doctorate in Audiology at The Ohio State University. Dr. Durinka is passionate about providing excellent family-centered care to all patients. Her clinical interests include diagnostic evaluations, electrophysiology, hearing aids and bone conduction devices. Dr. Durinka also serves as the Student Coordinator for the Department of Audiology at Nationwide Children's and has a passion for clinical education.

Margaret Kettler

Maggie Kettler, AuD is an Audiologist and Senior Clinical Director at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Kettler specializes in diagnosis and treatment of children with hearing loss from birth-21 years old. She works with patients of varying ages and developmental needs. Dr. Kettler is currently a member of the interdisciplinary cochlear implant team at CCHMC. Dr. Kettler is a former president of the Ohio Speech, Language and Hearing Association and is currently a member of the Ohio Speech and Hearing Government Affairs Coalition. Maggie is passionate about serving not only our patients but also the audiology community. She is also an active member of the American Academy of Audiology.
