Update on Primary Prevention

From a public health perspective, primary prevention refers to when the disease is prevented from occurring at all. This form of prevention may include public health campaign to change behaviors which may transmit viral diseases such as CMV, pharmacological advances to reduce the effects of ototoxic drugs, or prevention of hearing loss causing infection like meningitis through vaccination programs. The presenter will review recent developments in the primary prevention of hearing loss from several prevalent causes including otitis media, aminoglycoside ototoxicity, quinine ototoxicity, noise induced hearing loss, pneumococcal meningitis, CMV, and rubella. The focus will be on technological and new pharmacological advances.

  • Describe the role of primary prevention as a strategy for the reduction of hearing loss in the world.
  • Relate new pharmacological advances in the prevention of hearing loss related to ototoxicity and infections
  • Discuss new research in the prevention of hearing loss
