I Can Do It! Now What? Differentiation Strategies for Early Childhood Academic Instruction

Teachers and therapists are often left wondering what to do next when a child achieves a simple academic skill and the adopted curriculum restricts further learning and advancement. With more rigid curriculum requirements, children with hearing loss may progress in the curriculum without a true understanding of academic concepts. While children seem to be doing well and accessing the curriculum fully, many hidden academic gaps are identified later in their educational journey when expectations are increased. Scaffolding upon early childhood foundational skills using differentiation strategies can set a child up for long-term success. This presentation will address 10 specific differentiation strategies that are easily implemented in an early childhood intervention setting. These strategies can be implemented by teachers, therapists, parents, and any member of a child’s interdisciplinary team. This presentation will include video examples, lesson plan samples, and photos of teachers using differentiation in the classroom. Each participant will receive resources and a comprehensive tool to support differentiation in their program.

  • Participants will identify at least five new differentiation strategies to implement in their program.
  • Participants will list at least three resources for age-appropriate academic goals.
  • Participants will write objective goals and activities using differentiation strategies.

She has a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Delta State University and a Master's degree in Early Oral Intervention from the University of Southern Mississippi. Sarabeth is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory-Verbal Educator.

Lindy Powell is the Executive Director at St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf - Indianapolis. She has a degree in Deaf Education/Special Education from Ball State University, and a Master’s in Education in Reading from The University of St. Thomas Houston. Lindy is a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory-Verbal Educator. She previously served as adjunct faculty for The UT Health Science Center San Antonio’s program in Deaf Education and Hearing Sciences.
