Native American-Specific Offender Treatment: a Proposed Treatment Guide
Domestic violence is a phenomenon that occurs in all cultures, but for Native Americans it wasn’t always that way. The cultural and historical context in which DV has become a serious public safety issue in Native communities is distinct from the general population in ways that can inform our clinical decisions and treatment planning. In this presentation these contextual and cultural differences will be described to help attendees make important adaptations to their current treatment practices when working with Native American DV offenders. A manual for the treatment of these clients was developed as part of the presenter’s doctoral applied research project and will be presented as an example of culture and trauma-informed treatment curriculum with evidence-based interventions and traditional healing practices.

Paul Flack has been been working in the helping professions since 1995, beginning as a social worker with Mountainland Head Start in Provo. Since then, he completed his Masters in Marriage & Family Therapy at the University of Nebraska in 2001 and his Doctor of Marriage & Family Therapy at Argosy University in 2018. He has worked primarily with underserved populations in this 24 year period, and is passionate about culture-specific and trauma-informed treatment. His areas of professional expertise are culture-specific trauma, cultural adaptation of established clinical practices, and Marriage & Family Therapy training and supervision. His areas of clinical expertise are in the treatment of substance use disorders, historical and acute trauma, and systems-based domestic violence recovery. He has previously provided workshops for Salt Lake area social service agencies on the topic culturally appropriate advocacy and treatment practices, and has presented at the UAMFT, UADVT, and UCASA annual conferences. He has been certified to provide MFT student and associate supervision since 2007.
He is currently employed with Utah County as Manager of the Promise of Women & Families Substance Abuse Treatment program in Orem. He has been married to Julie Flack for 28 years and is father to three grown men and two teenagers.
