THE INFLUENCE ON THE TAXONOMIC SUFFICIENCY OF THE CHIRONOMIDAE ON THE OUTCOME OF A BIOMONITORING STUDY OF URBAN PRAIRIE STREAMS OF DIFFERING FLOW REGIMES

The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport sponsored a benthic macroinvertebrate biomonitoring study of the surrounding waterways to evaluate the effectiveness of its watershed protection practices. Study area waterways consist of intermittent stormwater outfall streams that drain airport runways and third-order streams that drain the surrounding urban landscape in the Blackland Prairie and Cross-Timber’s ecoregions of Texas. Chironomidae larvae were the most prevalent and diverse organism encountered in the studies. Using the bioassessment results, the taxonomic resolution of the Chironomidae are evaluated on their ability to distinguish ecological patterns and detect impairment. The urban streams differed widely in their flow regimes. Family and sub-family identifications were sufficient to determine coarse-scale differences between sites. Genus-level identifications were required to differentiate between more subtle differences in stream conditions. Additionally, correlations of physical-chemical and changes in watershed characteristics were strongest when the Chironomidae were identified to genus. Future bioassessment studies should consider the inclusion of finer levels of Chironomidae taxonomy to provide better bioassessments. This is particularly important in semi-arid regions where the chironomids are often dominant, and the taxa richness of other groups is naturally limited.
