Deaf Sons! Cochlear Implants! Sign Language! Learning English as a 2nd Language! What's a Parent to Do?!

This session will provide an opportunity for professionals in the audience to hear about the experiences of Adam and Isra Muhdi, whose interactions with the Early Intervention system of Illinois are somewhat unique, and allow these professionals to contemplate these families experiences, as well as reflect on their own practice, and how they might better serve families from such unique situations. Parents and family members will be given the opportunity to relate to the families presenting today. Both parents and professionals will be given the opportunity to discuss how the EHDI system can more effectively serve such families.

  • Participants will learn of how an Arabic speaking mother from Palestine, as well as her American-born husband, navigate raising two deaf sons.
  • Participants will be asked to reflect on their own practice, and how they can more effectively serve such families mentioned in Objectives #1.
  • Participants will be asked to reflect on their own practice, and how they can more effectively serve such families mentioned in Objectives #1
