Language, Play, Cognition, Pragmatics: It’s All Related.
Is it important that my child stack blocks? Does it matter if my child does not find an object hidden in front of him? My child is becoming defiant, is that ok? At specific ages, the answer to these questions would be yes. Even though these skills or behaviors would not be considered auditory development, they do play a very important role in language acquisition. Play, cognition and pragmatics are interrelated with language. For example, stacking blocks helps build language. A study showed children aged one and a half to two and a half who were provided with sets of molded plastic building bricks with which to play had significantly higher language scores six months later, compared with a control group who did not play with the bricks (Christakis, 2007). When focusing on developing a young child’s communication, it is essential that we be aware of auditory, speech and language milestones. It is also crucial that we be aware of other developmental milestones that interact with language. This presentation will briefly discuss the relationship of language with play, cognition and pragmatics. It will focus on describing typical development along with key milestones in the domains of play, cognition and pragmatics. Resources listing skills in the different domains be reviewed. A video case example will allow participants the opportunity to identify milestones in the different domains. Additionally, examples of how audition, speech, language, cognition and pragmatics can be facilitated through play will be demonstrated. Another case study will be presented allowing participants an opportunity to develop a lesson plan targeting all domains.
- Participants will be able to describe the stages of play development.
- Participants will be able to identify key milestones in pragmatic and cognitive development for children birth to three years of age.
- Participants will be able to list resources that may be used to identify milestones in play, cognition and pragmatics.
