The Accidental Leader

There are thousands of books written about the topic of leadership. They are mostly written by highly educated researchers, or famous people who have accomplished a lot in life. But this presentation is about the concept of ordinary people embracing the aspects of leadership in their everyday lives and the work they do. DesGeorges, as a mom and the Executive Director of H&V, will share her own personal journey of leadership development, and the importance for all leaders within EHDI systems - including parents, professionals and D/HH adults- to understand and build upon the leadership skills necessary to ensure successful systems. Specific leadership skill-building strategies will be addressed, including: finding balance, succession planning, letting go of ego.

  • Define and identify the importance of leadership development in your personal and organizational work
  • Develop strategies to effectively create capacity and sustainability within EHDI development.
  • Understand essential building blocks of leadership development including themes of: balance, replacing yourself, who to surround yourself with, letting go of ego.

Janet DesGeorges lives in Boulder, Colorado and is Executive Director of Hands & Voices Headquarters. Janet has presented to groups worldwide about the experiences of families as they journey through life with a child with deafness or hearing loss. Ms. DesGeorges received a program certificate from the MCH Public Health Leadership Institute in 2011 at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. As an EHDI Systems advocate, Janet believes in the principles and guiding philosophies of Hands & Voices towards a parent-driven, professionally-collaborative approach when supporting families in the early years. Her areas of interest include Leadership Development for parents who participate in systemic improvement; Deaf Education Reform and Improvement; Children’s Safety and Success(preventing child abuse and neglect); Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Systems; and Parent/Professional partnerships in Quality Improvement processes.
