Language Assessment & Intervention: Closing the Gap
Language is the foundation upon which the academic skills of reading and writing are built. Assessment of a child’s language proficiencies, in both American Sign Language and English, is needed to determine if there is a gap between a child’s language age and their chronological age. Assessment results that reveal a discrepancy or gap between the child’s language age and chronological age indicate a need for targeted intervention. This session will discuss how to determine the appropriate quality and quantity of intervention needed to close that gap. We will also explore methods to progress monitor growth in both languages over time to determine if the intervention is resulting in adequate gains.
- The participant will be able to explain the difference between a child’s chronological age and language age.
- The participant will be able to describe how to calculate the appropriate quantity of language intervention necessary based on the language gap.
- The participant will be able to identify an ASL/English bilingual protocol to progress monitor language acquisition in both languages.
