Understanding the Experiences of Male and LGBTQ Survivors
This workshop will provide a general overview of current consideration in working with male and LGBTQ survivors or sexual exploitation. Included will be an exploration of barriers that contribute to the isolation and invisibility for each of these populations of survivors, changing legal and cultural norms that can enhance access to these survivors, clinical features that can improve service delivery, and alternative perspectives and interventions to expand engagement. The presenter will prioritize a focus on practical application within the perspective of social justice values.
- Increase awareness & skills of participants about -the actual prevalence of male sexual victimization
- Increase awareness & skills of participants about - their understanding of trauma dynamics for survivors who are male and/or LGBTQ
- Increase awareness & skills of participants about -the importance of service delivery with conscious awareness of social justice considerations

Jim Struve, LCSW has been working with male sexual trauma since 1976. He was a co-organizer for the first international conference (1989) to address the topic of non-offending male survivors of sexual trauma and he was a founding member of MaleSurvivor.org in 1995. He has been a member of the Weekend of Recovery program since 2003 and he currently serves as Executive Director of the MenHealing/Weekends of Recovery organization. He was a founding member of the LGBTQ-Affirmative Psychotherapist of Utah (2004) and devotes much of his time to social justice advocacy work. Jim also has a number of publications and is a frequent presenter on topics related to sexual trauma as well as sexual and gender diversity.
