Role Model DVD: Supporting Families with Involvement, Part 2

JCIH (Goal 11, Supplement to 2007 Statement) and Best-Practices in Family–Centered Early Intervention for Children Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: An International Statement (Best Practice Principle 4, 2013) recommends EHDI programs provide access to role models who are D/HH. This presentation will describe the process the British Columbia Early Hearing Program (BCEHP) used for identifying ways to support connections with role models who are D/HH. This process included a variety of D/HH individuals and Parents engaged in evaluating benefits and challenges of access to role models in BC, and deciding on possible resources. This advisory of D/HH individuals and Parents decided on a DVD to accompany an existing resource (previously presented at EHDI 2012), and identified the key purpose and messages of the DVD. Lead consultants, one individual who is Deaf and one Parent, were involved throughout the making of this 22 minute film. Participants of this presentation will also view this DVD. This film is now provided to parents and families in BC soon after learning their baby/young child is deaf or hard of hearing.

  • Identify some of the benefits of parents and families “meeting” a wide variety of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals soon after their baby is confirmed to be deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Identify some challenges to providing access to adult Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals (in BC).
  • Describe a successful approach and process to creating opportunities for parents and family members to “meet” a range of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals early on in their parenting journey.
